Barbara Ellen Kingsolver ist die mit dem Pulitzer-Preis ausgezeichnete Autorin von Die Giftbeeren-Bibel (The Poisonwood Bible), einem literarischen Meisterwerk, das Kolonialismus, Glauben und den Zusammenprall der Kulturen im postkolonialen Afrika erforscht.

Geboren im Jahr 1955 und aufgewachsen im ländlichen Kentucky, erwarb Kingsolver Abschlüsse in Biologie an der DePauw University und der University of Arizona, was ihren Erzählungen eine wissenschaftliche Tiefe verleiht. Ein Jahr ihrer Kindheit im Kongo (1963) prägte diesen Roman aus dem Jahr 1998 über die erschütternde Reise einer Missionarsfamilie in Afrika zutiefst.
