Karen Keilt, Autorin von The Parrot's Perch: A Memoir of Torture and Corruption in Brazil, ist eine Überlebende und heutige Aktivistin, deren Augenzeugenbericht systemische Menschenrechtsverletzungen unter der brasilianischen Militärdiktatur offenlegt. Geboren in São Paulo als Tochter eines brasilianischen Vaters und einer amerikanischen Mutter, kollidierte Keilts privilegierte Erziehung mit unvorstellbarem Trauma, als sie und ihr Ehemann 1976 von der brasilianischen Polizei widerrechtlich inhaftiert, gefoltert und vergewaltigt wurden.
