Heckenberger showed us pottery shards scattered throughout the area and pointed out straight embankments that had once been road curbs. "Roads. Causeways. Canals," he explained, noting that some roads had been nearly one hundred and fifty feet wide, with wooden bridges spanning half-mile stretches across rivers. These were the very dreamlike causeways and settlements Spanish conquistadores had described-the ones Fawcett believed in and scientists had dismissed as myths. Heckenberger had uncovered twenty pre-Columbian settlements in the Xingu, occupied between A.D. 800 and 1600, laid out along cardinal points with roads at precise geometric angles. Each settlement cluster contained 2,000-5,000 people-comparable to medieval European cities. The discovery had upended traditional views of the Amazon as unable to sustain the civilization Fawcett envisioned. Though Fawcett never found Z in his lifetime, his intuition about the Amazon's capacity to support sophisticated ancient civilizations had been vindicated. The lost city wasn't a mirage-it had simply been hiding in plain sight, waiting for science to catch up with one explorer's remarkable vision.
