While conventional wisdom held that hosts could only reject foreign eggs but never reject cuckoo chicks, Australian fairy-wrens and thornbills have evolved the remarkable ability to recognize and reject cuckoo chicks. In response, Australian bronze-cuckoos have evolved extraordinary mimicry of host chicks in appearance, size, skin color, down color, and even mouth coloration. Fairy-wrens have developed an ingenious defense against cuckoo mimicry: they teach their embryos a family password while still in the egg. Mothers produce special incubation calls containing unique signature notes, which embryonic chicks memorize before hatching. After hatching, legitimate chicks incorporate this password into their begging calls, allowing parents to identify their true offspring. Despite their reputation as lazy cheats, female cuckoos face tremendous challenges-monitoring 10-15 nests simultaneously, timing egg-laying perfectly within a three-day window, and completing the egg swap in just six seconds. Their specialized brain structure, with an enlarged hippocampus, supports their extraordinary spatial memory and observational skills. As researcher Naomi Langmore notes, "Because of the bizarre evolutionary arms race they're engaged in, they've become the world's best birdwatchers."
