Though controversial in traditional educational circles, its influence quietly permeates modern pedagogical thinking, with tech industry leaders and innovative schools worldwide drawing inspiration from its core principles. At its heart lies a deceptively simple question: What if education were designed not to preserve the status quo but to equip students with the critical thinking skills needed to transform it?

Detecting Nonsense: Education's Primary Function
In a democratic society, schools must develop in youth the attitudes and skills of social, political, and cultural criticism. Our intellectual history chronicles those who helped contemporaries recognize misconceptions and falsehoods. From Socrates to modern thinkers, these "subversives" have consistently challenged prevailing wisdom. Schools should cultivate this expertise in "crap detecting"-what sociologist David Riesman calls the "counter-cyclical" approach to education, mathematician Norbert Wiener terms "anti-entropic feedback systems," and philosopher John Gardner describes as the "ever-renewing society."
This requires developing an anthropological perspective-being part of one's culture while simultaneously viewing it objectively. Such perspective demands courage to achieve freedom from tribal intellectual constraints, recognizing that most people's doctrinal acceptance stems from birth accident rather than rational choice. Those sensitive to language's built-in biases appear "subversive" precisely because they see beyond words to underlying processes.
Three urgent problems demand schools become training centers for "subversion." First, the "communications revolution" has created environments requiring entirely new survival strategies. When technological elements change an environment, political and social forms radically transform, necessitating new patterns of defense, perception and evaluation.
Second, the "Change Revolution" has fundamentally altered our relationship with time and knowledge. Using a clock face metaphor representing 3,000 years of human writing, most significant media changes occurred only in the last "minutes"-printing press (nine minutes ago), telegraph and photography (three minutes ago), and television, computers and satellites mere seconds ago. Unlike previous generations who could live without confronting serious challenges to their knowledge or values, today's rapid change forces each person to continuously develop viable personal value systems that quickly become irrelevant as circumstances transform.
Third, bureaucracies naturally resist change, their motto being "Carry On, Regardless." They rarely ask "Why?" but only "How?" As John Gardner observed, the problem isn't finding new ideas but getting them heard through the "crusty rigidity" of the status quo. Schools must function as "anti-bureaucracy bureaucracies," providing youth with a "What is it good for?" perspective on society.

Marshall McLuhan's famous aphorism "The medium is the message" reveals that environments themselves convey critical messages by controlling the perceptions and attitudes of participants. What you learn comes from what your environment permits, encourages, or insists you experience. Educational discourse is trapped by the false dichotomy between "content" (the substance students are there to "get") and "method" (merely the means of presentation). This separation communicates that content courses are "real" while methods courses are "fake." The critical content of any learning experience is the method through which learning occurs. What students do in classrooms is what they learn-and mostly, they sit listening to teachers, believing authorities, and memorizing information.
Classrooms primarily feature "convergent questions"-"Guess what I'm thinking" questions about nouns, Civil War causes, or chromosome counts. Students constantly supply "The Right Answer" across all subjects. Since content is rarely remembered beyond quizzes, the only lasting learning comes from the classroom structure itself.
These unwritten but powerfully communicated messages include: passive acceptance trumps active criticism; knowledge discovery is beyond students' capacity; recall is the highest intellectual achievement; authority outweighs independent judgment; students' ideas are inconsequential; feelings are irrelevant; and every question has one unambiguous Right Answer.

The Inquiry Method: A New Learning Environment
The Inquiry Method represents a complete redesign of classroom structure-not merely a refinement of old approaches but a revolutionary new medium with entirely different messages. Unlike traditional environments that transmit pre-packaged knowledge, this approach fundamentally changes how learning happens.
Our tendency to dismiss ideas by merely naming them-"labeling as libeling"-prevents true understanding. While educators debate whether to call it Socratic, inductive, or discovery method, such naming misses the point. The inquiry method is a process requiring description and scrutiny rather than taxonomic classification.
Most educators evaluate the inquiry method through outdated metrics: Will students pass Regents exams? Score well on College Boards? Memorize facts? This backward-looking perspective misses the point entirely. Like viewing locomotives as "iron horses" or electric lights as powerful candles, it fails to recognize that inquiry learning activates different senses, attitudes, and perceptions, generating a bolder, more potent intelligence.
Traditional education follows a linear "story line" where teachers transmit pre-packaged narratives to passive students. The inquiry method, reflecting our electric age's disruption of linear information flow, eliminates this approach. Instead of asking "Who discovered America?", it asks "How do you discover who discovered America?" Students generate their own understanding by engaging with methods of learning rather than absorbing content.
Good learners possess distinctive qualities: confidence in their ability to learn despite frustrations; enjoyment in solving problems without being given answers; awareness of what's relevant to their survival; reliance on their own judgment rather than authorities; comfort with being wrong and changing their minds; patience in delaying judgments until gathering sufficient information; flexibility in shifting perspectives; respect for facts while understanding their tentative nature; skilled inquiry behaviors including asking meaningful questions and examining assumptions; and comfort with uncertainty.
The inquiry environment has four components: teacher, students, problems, and problem-solving strategies. The inquiry teacher rarely tells students what they should know, preferring questioning (especially divergent) as their primary discourse mode. They reject single "right answers," encourage student-student interaction over student-teacher interaction, avoid summarizing positions, develop lessons from student responses rather than predetermined structures, pose problems rather than deliver content, and measure success by behavioral changes in students' inquiry skills.

The Relevance Crisis: Connecting Learning to Life
The problem of relevance in education cannot be overstated. Too often, educators teach subjects "for their own sake" or merely because they personally enjoy them, without connecting content to students' lives and needs. This disconnect creates a profound alienation between students and the educational process - a gap that widens as students progress through their academic careers.
Consider the typical school assignment about Ancient Egypt or Greece, featuring structured questions about climate, geography, and occupations that students must answer after reading assigned texts. While these topics hold intrinsic historical value, the way they're typically taught bears no relation to students' actual concerns or the pressing issues they face in their lives. Instead of exploring how ancient civilizations solved problems similar to those we face today, or drawing parallels between historical social structures and modern society, students are often reduced to memorizing dates and facts without context or relevance.
The consequences of this irrelevance became starkly clear in the 1967 cheating scandal at DeWitt Clinton High School, where four seniors distributed stolen exam answers, resulting in 2,000 students having to retake tests. Student reactions revealed their deep alienation from the educational process - they discussed the unfairness of retesting and their anxiety about passing without cheating, but showed no concern for the actual learning that was supposedly taking place. This incident exemplifies how the educational system had failed to create meaningful connections between academic content and student development.
This disconnect between education and students' perceived needs creates a system where cheating becomes a rational response to an irrational environment. When education fails to address what students genuinely need to know - whether it's critical thinking skills, practical life skills, or knowledge applicable to their future careers - the entire enterprise becomes a game of compliance rather than learning. Students learn to navigate the system rather than engage with the material, focusing on grades and test scores instead of genuine understanding and personal growth.
Modern educational research suggests that relevant learning experiences should connect to at least one of three areas: students' current lives, their aspirations for the future, or their cultural and personal identities. When these connections are missing, students struggle to find meaning in their educational experiences, leading to decreased motivation, poor retention of information, and a diminished capacity for applying knowledge in real-world situations. The challenge for educators lies not just in teaching content, but in demonstrating its relevance to students' lives in ways that spark genuine interest and engagement.

Building a Curriculum Worth Knowing
What if all curricula, textbooks, and standardized tests suddenly disappeared? This hypothetical "catastrophe" presents an opportunity to increase educational relevance by building a curriculum entirely of questions-not just any questions, but ones worth seeking answers to from the students' perspective.
Education should be about drawing out what's latent in students, not filling them with information. True learning happens in relation to what we already know, which requires a major revision of educational metaphors. A relevant curriculum might begin with deeply meaningful questions about personal values, meaning-making, symbols, change, survival strategies, and ultimately, what's worth knowing.
The standards for evaluating educational questions should be: Will they increase the learner's will and capacity to learn? Will they provide joy and confidence in learning? Do they require inquiry and allow alternative answers? Do they stress learner uniqueness while helping understand universal human conditions? These standards contrast sharply with traditional "high standards" that focus on covering ground and difficult assignments.
A Questions Curriculum demonstrates how a single question like "What is language?" can expand into hundreds of meaningful inquiries. Students in one class developed extensive questions about advertising language, news reporting, political language, religious language, and scientific language-revealing how traditional subject boundaries dissolve when inquiry is prioritized.
This approach works especially well for "disadvantaged children" by focusing on learners rather than predetermined content. Question-asking is the source of all knowledge, and meaningful learning requires problems perceived as relevant by learners themselves.

Making Meaning: The Core of Learning
There is no learning without a learner and no meaning without a meaning maker. To survive in a world of rapid change, the most valuable skill is knowing how to make viable meanings. The new education isn't about offering more, but about entering a fundamentally new business: crap-detecting and relevance-finding.
Teachers have always been ambivalent about what they do, especially regarding conceptions of the human mind. Some see themselves as Lamplighters illuminating darkness, others as Gardeners cultivating minds, Personnel Managers keeping minds busy, Muscle Builders strengthening flabby minds, or Bucket Fillers filling minds up. But all these metaphors have limitations.
We can only speak of "the mind" metaphorically. The word itself suggests a thing rather than a process. As Dewey noted, "minding" (as process) is more accurate than "the mind" (as thing). Our language forces "thing" conceptions upon us through nouns, when reality is more fluid.
The fundamental metaphor of the new education is "minding" as "meaning making," a concept rooted in Adelbert Ames Jr.'s perception studies. His work revealed several critical insights: First, our perceptions come from us, not from external things. Second, what we perceive depends largely on our previous experiences, assumptions, and purposes. Third, we rarely change our perceptions until frustrated in acting upon them. Fourth, each individual perceives uniquely. Fifth, perception largely functions through available linguistic categories. Sixth, a perception's meaning is revealed in how it causes us to act.
Professor Robert Rosenthal's studies dramatically illustrate the meaning-making concept. He discovered rats performed better when experimenters were told they were "intelligent," and similarly, randomly selected schoolchildren made dramatic gains when teachers were told these students would excel. This demonstrates how expectations shape both perception and performance.
If teachers treated students as meaning makers, schooling would transform completely. Most school practices wrongly assume students are passive receivers of fixed subject matter. In reality, learners make something uniquely their own from whatever we tell them, building it into their existing experience. This means "student-centered curriculum" isn't just motivational-it's the only viable approach.

Language: The Window and Prison of Perception
Simple yet profound ideas can transform societies-like the Copernican revolution or evolution theory. The concept that our perceptions come from us-that we see things not as they are but as we are-has similar transformative potential.
Each person creates their unique world, generating whatever reality they know. Language isn't neutral in perception but fully implicated in reality assessment. We don't "get" meaning from things; we assign meaning through our symbol systems. Our language habits shape our perceptions-like believing time consists of past, present and future, or that things have inherent characteristics.
This perspective on language and reality, named after anthropologists Edward Sapir and Benjamin Whorf, suggests each language represents a unique way of perceiving reality. We're imprisoned in a "house of language" with tinted windows at odd angles, limiting what we can perceive. This reaffirms that "the medium is the message"-language isn't just a vehicle of expression but the driver itself.
Almost everything we call "knowledge" is language-a subject IS its language. Biology, history, astronomy-all are inseparable from their specialized vocabularies. Every teacher is therefore a language teacher, teaching ways of talking and seeing the world. The new education must be language-centered, studying language as the major factor producing our perceptions, judgments, and institutions.
Alfred Korzybski developed "General Semantics" to address how language simultaneously enables humans to "bind time" while blinding them to reality. His system aims to keep language users conscious of how their words correspond to sense verification. Key concepts include: meaning exists in people, not words; words are not what they refer to; consciousness of abstraction-recognizing that we select only portions of reality for which we have verbal labels; and the "photographic" effects of language that fix changing realities.
A language-centered classroom puts semantic awareness at the heart of all inquiries. Students learn that language shapes perception and determines what we can know. They explore how different subjects require different language systems-what constitutes a "fact" in biology differs from mathematics, and what "theory" means shifts between disciplines. They learn to distinguish between closed systems (with fixed right/wrong answers) and open systems (with degrees of rightness that change over time).

Transforming Teachers for a New Education
If the new education makes sense to you, you've likely wondered where we'll find teachers capable of implementing it. Most existing educators are too committed to old metaphors and procedures to adapt. When teen students confronted teachers about communication problems in schools, some teachers walked out rather than listen. One teacher even shouted "It's not my job to love my pupils-it's my job to teach them," revealing a fundamental misunderstanding of how learning happens.
Since perception change sometimes occurs when people are forced into new viewpoints, consider these proposals to radically alter the school environment: Ban all textbooks for five years; have teachers teach subjects outside their expertise; swap elementary and high school teachers; require teachers to write books on their subjects; dissolve all subjects, courses and requirements; limit teachers to three declarative sentences and fifteen questions per class; prohibit teachers from asking questions they already know the answers to; declare a moratorium on tests and grades; require all teachers to undergo psychotherapy; classify teachers publicly by ability; require teachers to pass tests prepared by students; make classes elective with teacher pay dependent on student interest; require teachers to work outside education every fourth year; require evidence of loving relationships; display toilet graffiti in school halls; ban educational jargon.
Current teacher education produces intellectual paraplegics who've spent 16 years learning not to think independently. An alternative approach shifts prospective teachers into the role of inventors rather than passive recipients. In a "general methods course," students from various subject specialties might collaboratively design "Quo Vadimus High School"-the best possible secondary school for the nuclear space age. Their first reaction is incredulity, then hostility at the instructor's refusal to lecture or give exams. The challenge requires them to unlearn educational myths they "know" that "ain't so"-like content expertise equals teaching ability, departmentalization is necessary, or homogeneous grouping works.
Kapitel 10
City Schools as Community Transformation Centers
City schools confine students to boxes where they must either submit to teacher demands or leave. The conventional structure of these schools, especially for "disadvantaged" students, actually creates the problems educators deplore. For urban disadvantaged children, particularly when white teachers work with Negro students, schools become hostile environments. The predictable result: students neither learn what schools claim to teach nor remain enrolled once legally able to escape.
Rather than viewing city schools as structures, we should see them as processes focused on community service. This approach transforms schools into local "think tanks" where students identify community problems, plan solutions, and implement immediate improvements. The community becomes the curriculum, with students across all age ranges serving as primary action agents, rewarded not just with grades but with valued currency including public recognition.
This schooling approach uses the entire city as a learning laboratory, with services including community planning, repair services, cultural productions, athletic programs, and work in city agencies. Students could produce and sell goods ranging from clothing to food to art, operate gardens and workshops, and even create kibbutz-like experiences. Such a system develops community leadership while freeing students from alienating detention, channeling adolescent energy into constructive rather than destructive directions.

Practical Steps Toward Educational Revolution
If you're a teacher in an ordinary school, and these ideas make sense to you... what can you do about it, say tomorrow? Your first act of subversion might be writing three questions on a paper to view daily: What am I going to have my students do today? What's it good for? How do I know? These questions will make you uneasy about teaching things of specious value and may drive you to reconsider everything you're doing.
In class, avoid telling your students answers. Instead, present problems and let them work through without your advice. Your talk should consist only of questions based on their remarks. When students ask questions, tell them you don't know the answer, even if you do. Don't fear silence-it might mean they're thinking or growing productively hostile as the burden of intellectual activity shifts to them.
Try several practical experiments: Listen to your students without reacting or judging-imagine yourself as a psychiatrist trying to understand rather than instruct. Have students practice asking questions by requiring all utterances be in question form for two days. Present a problem and have them compile questions that might help solve it.
Examine your grading practices by writing down reasons for each grade and imagining yourself as the student receiving it. Track your judgments about students, both verbal and nonverbal. Both negative and positive judgments can impede learning-negative ones cause students to judge themselves negatively, while excessive positive judgments create dependency.
Experiment with imagining your students as the smartest in school. What would you do differently if you acted as if they had great potential? People often become what others expect them to be. This "self-fulfilling prophecy" is particularly powerful in education.
Try giving all students A's for the term. Initially they won't believe you, but once they do, they can focus on learning rather than grades. Help them discover what knowledge they find worth pursuing without fear of reprisal. Most students will work diligently without grade pressure; the few who "goof off" are a small price for providing others with perhaps their only decent intellectual experience in school.

Survival in an Age of Accelerating Change
The basic function of education is to increase the survival prospects of the group. When this function isn't fulfilled, groups and even entire civilizations disappear. The problem arises when educational systems become devoted exclusively to conserving old ideas, which works only in stable environments. But when change becomes the primary environmental characteristic, survival depends on identifying which old concepts remain relevant and which must be unlearned.
We've now reached a stage environmentally where "selective forgetting" has become necessary for survival. Technologically wrought changes have rendered many traditional concepts not merely irrelevant but actual threats to survival if we fail to recognize their obsolescence.
The Ecumenical Council convened by Pope John XXIII illustrates institutional adaptation to environmental change. The Church "selectively forgot" concepts conserved for nearly 2,000 years, including the notion that "Christ was killed by the Jews." These changes, though belated, were necessary for the Church's survival as it faced a widening gap between its institutional structure and the changing environment.
Almost all concepts we've painfully had to unlearn resulted from scientific method. When Galileo suggested humans weren't the center of the universe, institutions conserving the opposite concept responded without enthusiasm. Darwin faced similar resistance when his observations challenged Genesis. The concept "that we must unlearn dead concepts" is itself new and uncongenial to most encountering it.
Electronic machines now perform intellectual tasks better than humans, creating unprecedented environmental changes. Robert Theobald warns that incredible changes will occur within 35 years, requiring us to help young people learn new beliefs, institutions and values. Education's most important function is helping people recognize the world they actually live in while mastering concepts to cope with it.
The concepts we must learn now are those which both shape and derive from technological change: relativity, probability, contingency, uncertainty, function, structure as process, multiple causality, nonsymmetrical relationships, degrees of difference, and incongruity. These intellectual strategies for nuclear-space-age survival comprise the ingredients for changing ourselves to meet environmental demands. The new education's purpose is developing people who are actively inquiring, flexible, creative, innovative, tolerant, and liberal-personalities who can face uncertainty without disorientation and formulate new meanings to meet threatening changes. In sum, we need to help students develop built-in, shockproof crap detectors as basic equipment in their survival kits.
