William Diehl (1924–2006) war der Bestsellerautor von Zwielicht (Originaltitel: Primal Fear), einem meisterhaften Justizthriller, der die dunkle Psychologie von Mord, Manipulation und Gerechtigkeit erkundet. Als ehemaliger Fotojournalist und Autor für das Atlanta Journal-Constitution begann Diehl seine Karriere als Romanschriftsteller im Alter von 50 Jahren, wobei er Jahrzehnte des investigativen Journalismus und seine Erfahrungen als Bordschütze im Zweiten Weltkrieg in fesselnde Kriminalliteratur einfließen ließ.

Sein tiefes Verständnis der menschlichen Natur und moralischer Ambiguität wurde zum Fundament für komplexe Gerichtsdramen und psychologische Spannung. Zwielicht führte den Strafverteidiger Martin Vail ein und startete eine gefeierte Serie, zu der auch Show of Evil und Reign in Hell gehören.

Zu Diehls weiteren bemerkenswerten Werken gehören Sharky's Machine (1981 verfilmt unter der Regie von Burt Reynolds) und der historische Thriller Eureka, der von Publishers Weekly als „sein bisher bester Roman“ gelobt wurde.
