The 1965 immigration reforms further transformed demographics, with newcomers arriving primarily from Latin America and Asia rather than Europe. By 2000, Mexico, China, Philippines, India and Cuba had replaced European countries as the primary sources of immigrants.

Vietnam is a quintessentially ethnic nation defined by blood-identity and opposition to China. Despite China's overwhelming size advantage - comparable to the US versus Ecuador - Vietnam fiercely maintained its distinct identity through millennia of struggle.
Though China conquered Vietnam in 111 B.C. and ruled it for a thousand years, the Vietnamese refused assimilation. Even after gaining independence in 938, Vietnam remained under Chinese domination for another millennium, repeatedly repelling invasions against overwhelming odds. Vietnamese national identity crystallized further in the 1920s when intellectuals opposed both French colonialism and Chinese influence. This deep historical animosity toward China made America's Cold War assumption that Vietnam was "China's pawn" a catastrophic misreading.
Equally significant was America's blindness to Vietnam's internal ethnic dynamics. The Hoa (ethnic Chinese) in Vietnam controlled 80% of South Vietnam's industry despite being a tiny percentage of the population. They lived apart from Vietnamese in wealthy enclaves, which fueled local resentment. During the war, American policies intensified Hoa wealth as they handled 60% of U.S. aid imports and controlled the black market. They avoided military service through bribery while ethnic Vietnamese died fighting.
From a tribal perspective, every American policy turned Vietnamese against us. We backed a regime that enriched the hated Chinese minority while ordinary Vietnamese suffered. When we withdrew in 1973, Vietnam's ethnonationalist dimension became starkly clear as the new Socialist government launched campaigns targeting the Chinese. Their businesses were raided, assets nationalized, and over 250,000 ethnic Chinese were driven out. The "Vietnamese boat people" Americans heard about were actually 85% ethnic Chinese. Vietnam's Communist revolution proved intensely ethnonationalist, culminating in war with China by 1979 - completely contradicting America's assumption that Vietnam was a Chinese pawn.

Afghanistan remains a black box for most Americans despite being our longest war. We've failed to meet our objectives after fifteen years, thousands of lives, and billions of dollars because we've been oblivious to the region's true group identities - not national but ethnic, tribal, and clan-based. The country comprises at least fourteen ethnic groups, with Pashtuns, Tajiks, Uzbeks, and Hazaras being the largest.
Afghanistan's history is deeply intertwined with Pashtun identity. Established in 1747 by Pashtun king Ahmad Shah Durrani, Afghanistan was ruled almost continuously by Pashtuns until 1973. Significantly, Pakistan has more Pashtuns (28 million) than Afghanistan (15 million), with most living near the border they freely cross. This has made Pakistan's Punjabi-dominated government fearful of Pashtun nationalism.
Following the Soviet invasion in 1979, the Carter administration opted to covertly arm the Afghan mujahedin through Pakistan, effectively outsourcing our Cold War policy to Pakistan's dictator General Zia-ul-Haq. Pakistan manipulated ethnic politics by implementing a divide-and-conquer strategy among the tribally fragmented Pashtuns. Zia empowered Islamist Pashtuns, built madrassas teaching extremist fundamentalism, and worked to destroy Pashtun nationalism. American policymakers, fixated on fighting communism, romanticized the mujahedin as freedom fighters while funneling nearly $5 billion in weapons through Pakistan, inadvertently arming future Taliban leaders.
The Taliban's power came from exploiting Pashtun ethnic identity and resentment. In the early 1990s, Tajiks controlled much of Afghanistan, including Kabul, leaving Pashtuns feeling marginalized. The Taliban leadership, primarily Ghilzai Pashtuns, used Pashto exclusively and promised to restore Pashtun dominance. Their strategy was brilliantly effective - approaching tribal leaders in rural areas, speaking local dialects, and offering to reclaim Pashtun control. This explains their rapid takeover, as they swept through Pashtun areas with little resistance while facing strong opposition in non-Pashtun regions.
America's invasion in 2001 was plagued by tribal miscalculations. We allied with the Northern Alliance - Tajik and Uzbek warlords viewed as anti-Pashtun. When Uzbek commander Dostum killed thousands of surrendered Taliban soldiers, Pashtuns saw it as ethnic revenge. We further alienated Pashtuns with the post-Taliban government, excluding moderate Pashtuns associated with Taliban through clan ties while giving key positions to Tajiks. Though Karzai was Pashtun, Tajiks (only 24% of the population) filled 70% of army command positions, leading to the bitter saying among Pashtuns: "They get the dollars, and we get the bullets."
After declaring victory, we neglected security and basic services, allowing corruption and lawlessness to return. By 2010, despite spending $650 billion and sacrificing 2,200 American lives, the Taliban controlled major portions of Afghanistan. Our failure stemmed from never understanding or addressing "the Pashtun problem" - the fact that Pashtuns see Afghanistan as rightfully theirs after founding and ruling it for over 200 years.

Iraq: Democracy's Tribal Minefield
The 2003 Iraq invasion was based on a fundamental misunderstanding. U.S. leaders modeled their approach on post-WWII Germany and Japan, where overthrowing authoritarian regimes led to successful democratization. With this template, Bush and Cheney predicted Iraqis would welcome American liberators with joy and establish a peaceful democracy.
This comparison was fatally flawed. Unlike ethnically homogeneous Japan and Germany, Iraq more closely resembled 1990s Yugoslavia: a multiethnic nation with deep religious divides, historical ethnic enmities, a market-dominant minority, weak national identity, and a history of being held together by a charismatic military dictator.
On the eve of the U.S. invasion, Iraq's Sunni minority (roughly 15%) dominated the country economically, politically, and militarily, while Shias comprised the majority of the rural and urban poor. Saddam Hussein took Sunni favoritism to new extremes after becoming president in 1979, filling government, military and intelligence positions with Sunnis - especially from his own hometown and clan - while ruthlessly persecuting Shias and Kurds.
From the moment U.S. troops arrived, Sunni insurgents began fighting against the American invaders who they correctly believed would bring the Shia majority to power. The Coalition Provisional Authority's ignorance about Iraq's sectarian dynamics led to catastrophic decisions. The "de-Baathification" order stripped anyone in the top four ranks of the Baath party from their jobs, reinforcing Sunni fears of disenfranchisement. Even worse was disbanding the Iraqi army, instantly creating 250,000-350,000 unemployed, armed Sunni men with military training and no livelihood. Many joined insurgency groups - by 2015, over 60% of ISIS's leaders were former Baathists.
The U.S. solution was immediate democratization. Despite early warning signs that extremist groups were the most organized political entities, America pressed forward with elections. The resulting political parties tracked along ethnic and sectarian lines - Shias voted for Shias, Kurds for Kurds, Sunnis for Sunnis - hardening sectarian positions rather than uniting the country.
In 2007, President Bush ordered twenty thousand additional troops to Iraq, dramatically reducing sectarian violence. The surge succeeded because it represented a complete reversal in America's approach to the local population, pursuing explicitly group-focused, ethnically conscious policies. General Petraeus focused on "bottom-up engagement of tribes," with U.S. troops living among local people rather than in remote bases.
While the surge made military progress through tribal engagement, our political strategy remained disastrously tribe-blind. After the 2005 elections gave the Shia majority control of parliament, America backed Nouri al-Maliki for prime minister, somehow ignoring his lifelong hatred of Sunnis. Once in power, Maliki predictably began excluding, detaining, and executing Sunnis. This Sunni disenfranchisement directly birthed ISIS - a movement founded, led and populated by Sunnis who felt persecuted by the Shia government.

The Tribal Psychology of Terrorism
Unlike serial killers who typically exhibit psychopathic personality disorders, terrorists generally don't show deviant or abnormal personality traits. Despite numerous studies attempting to identify specific psychological profiles, terrorists are consistently described by acquaintances as "lovely," "friendly," and "normal." The key insight is that terrorism isn't primarily an individual phenomenon - it's a group one, a murderous expression of tribal politics.
Groups profoundly shape our perception of reality. In the Robbers Cave experiment, boys divided into two teams consistently overestimated their own group members' performance compared to others, despite seeing identical evidence. More troublingly, intelligence and education don't overcome these biases - they amplify them. Yale research shows that people with stronger analytical skills are actually more likely to manipulate data to support their political tribe's worldview.
Group pressure also drives conformity. In Solomon Asch's landmark study, 75% of subjects chose obviously wrong answers after watching confederates do so. Later research showed people will publicly enforce group falsehoods they privately know are untrue. Group identity can unleash our darkest impulses, as individuals in groups "descend several rungs in the ladder of civilization," experiencing a "biochemical high" from hormones that simultaneously bond them to insiders while dehumanizing outsiders.
Islam Yaken exemplifies how ordinary people transform into terrorists. Growing up in a middle-class Cairo family, he was a fitness trainer with conventional dreams. After losing a friend and meeting an ultraconservative sheikh, he became intensely devout. When Egypt's political system disappointed him, he left for Syria, becoming an ISIS "poster boy." Through ISIS, Yaken achieved status he couldn't find at home.
While poverty is often cited as terrorism's root cause, many terrorist leaders come from privileged backgrounds. The key isn't poverty itself but group inequality. Every major terrorist movement has emerged from conditions where stark inequalities follow ethnic, religious or sectarian divides, creating widespread resentment. Terrorist organizations are typically led by better-situated, ambitious members of marginalized groups. Islamic terrorism thrives on the belief that Muslims as a group are being attacked and humiliated by the West.
Successful extremist groups offer what society doesn't: tribal belonging, purpose, enemies to hate, and a chance to transform group humiliation into triumph. Even as ISIS faces military defeat, the conditions that enabled its rise - Muslim marginalization and the cycle of terrorist violence triggering anti-Muslim sentiment - remain unresolved.

Venezuela's Tribal Revolution
Venezuela is a tragic mess, and U.S. foreign policy there has been completely ineffective. Once a staunch U.S. ally with the world's largest proven oil reserves, Venezuela became a thorn in America's side since 1998 when Hugo Chavez rose to power. Through our blindness to tribal identities and simmering ethnonationalist resentment, we undermined our own interests, turning vast numbers against us.
Latin Americans, especially Venezuelans, are obsessed with beauty pageants. Beauty is considered Venezuela's second-largest industry after oil, with two-thirds of the population watching the Miss Venezuela contest annually. Crucially, every Miss Venezuela had been light-skinned with European features, looking nothing like Venezuela's darker-skinned masses. Chavez, with his self-described "big mouth" and "African" curly hair, looked like the majority. His stunning victory shattered both the racial barrier and the taboo against mentioning these realities.
Throughout Latin America, there's a common claim that "there is no racism" because everyone is "mixed-blooded." The reality is that Latin American society is fundamentally pigmentocratic: structured with lighter-skinned, European-blooded elites at one end and darker, indigenous-blooded masses at the other. Venezuela perpetuated a national myth of "racial democracy" while wealth remained concentrated in white hands and 80 percent of the population - darker-skinned Venezuelans - lived in poverty.
Venezuela's white elite never imagined losing power. After all, they controlled the oil sector, media, banks, foreign investment networks, land, and lucrative businesses. But in 1998, Hugo Chavez won the presidency in a landslide. Chavez reversed Venezuelan racism by proudly calling himself "the Indian from Barinas" and highlighting his indigenous and African features. The elite revealed their racism by calling Chavez "El Negro" and "ese mono" (that monkey), depicting him as an ape in political cartoons.
When Chavez implemented nationalization and anti-business policies, Venezuela's wealthy elites transferred over $8 billion overseas. In April 2002, a coup briefly deposed Chavez, with the Bush administration embarrassingly calling it "a victory for democracy." But millions of poor Venezuelans from the barrios surrounded the presidential palace, and within 48 hours, Chavez returned to power.
Despite his autocratic tendencies, Chavez cut poverty by half and extreme poverty by 70%, while doubling college enrollment. After his death in 2013, his successor Nicolas Maduro lacked Chavez's charisma and shrewdness. When oil prices plummeted in 2014, Venezuela collapsed into 800% inflation, food shortages, and violence. Today, Venezuela is practically a failed state, showing the catastrophic consequences when democracy battles against a market-dominant minority.

America's Tribal Divide: The Haves and Have-Nots
The tribal politics tearing apart regions like the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Latin America aren't as distant from American reality as we might think. America has developed a chasm between the tribal identities of the country's haves and have-nots - exactly the kind of division causing political havoc in many developing countries.
The Occupy movement revealed this tribal divide in America's inequality activism. Studies showed Occupy participants were predominantly privileged - college-educated, relatively affluent, and overwhelmingly white. A CUNY study found 76% of non-student participants had bachelor's degrees, over half had postgraduate degrees, and most earned over $75,000 annually. Unlike successful movements like suffragettes or civil rights that included members from the groups they championed, Occupy attracted few from the disadvantaged populations it claimed to represent.
While America's poor are less politically engaged - less likely to vote, contact officials or join traditional civic organizations - they aren't individualists but intensely tribal. Their groups simply aren't ones elites recognize or respect. The sovereign citizens movement exemplifies this tribal phenomenon. With approximately 300,000 followers, the movement grew dramatically after the 2008 recession. Sovereign citizens believe an elaborate conspiracy theory: that America's legitimate government was secretly replaced, that applying for Social Security numbers creates "contracts" turning citizens into federal slaves, and that birth certificates establish secret corporate trusts siphoning earnings into hidden accounts.
America's 27,000 street gangs represent another intensely tribal group among the disadvantaged. Often racially or ethnically defined, these gangs offer disaffected youth what the legitimate system doesn't: status, community, and a shot at upward mobility. Though most end up imprisoned or dead by twenty, gangs provide marginalized young men their best perceived chance at the American Dream.
The prosperity gospel, preached in half of America's megachurches, teaches that wealth is divine blessing. Despite Jesus's warnings about serving money, prosperity preachers like Joel Osteen (who draws 7 million weekly viewers) creatively reinterpret scripture to suggest Jesus himself was wealthy. This theology appeals enormously to the struggling and disadvantaged, especially minorities. Rather than seeing themselves as victims, prosperity adherents are taught they're "victors" who control their destinies.
With 75 million fans, NASCAR stands as America's second most attended sport after the NFL, proudly embracing its white, working-class origins. NASCAR exemplifies tribalism through intense brand loyalty. Fans identify not just with manufacturers and drivers but with corporate sponsors. Studies show NASCAR fans are more brand loyal than fans of any other sport, being three times more likely to buy team-sponsored products. They view purchasing these products as actively supporting their tribe - "Got to drink Budweiser. If you ain't drinking Budweiser, you don't belong here."
Professional wrestling illuminates Trump's political success better than any other cultural phenomenon. WWE represents everything coastal elites find appalling - gaudy, fake, bombastic, violent, hypermasculine. While intellectuals theorize about wrestling's appeal to the working class, Trump actually participated in it, once entering the ring to battle WWE founder Vince McMahon. For Trump's supporters, as in wrestling, showmanship and symbolism matter more than literal truth. Where progressives saw an uncivilized brute spouting falsehoods, Trump supporters saw a hero in the mold of Hulk Hogan - a dominating figure promising to vanquish evil.

The Browning of America: Identity Politics Left and Right
For the first time in American history, white Americans will soon lose their majority status. The Census Bureau predicts this demographic shift by 2044. White Americans' reactions to this shift vary dramatically. Some, like President Clinton in 1998, welcomed this change as "energizing our culture" and "renewing our basic values." But history suggests dominant groups rarely surrender power easily. After the Civil War, when newly emancipated blacks outnumbered whites in several Southern states, whites responded with Jim Crow laws, poll taxes, and violence to prevent blacks from voting.
Two-thirds of white working-class Americans believe discrimination against whites is as serious as discrimination against minorities, with some even believing whites face more racism than blacks - despite statistics showing drastically worse outcomes for Black Americans. White anxiety about displacement has fueled conservative populism. Trump's 2016 victory drew strong support from counties "most unsettled by rapid demographic change." Post-election surveys found 52% of Trump voters felt like "strangers in their own land."
This anxiety isn't baseless for poor and working-class whites, who face high unemployment, declining life expectancy, and bleak educational prospects. Elite colleges rarely recruit from Appalachia, and diversity policies can disadvantage poor whites. While whites overall remain overrepresented in the Senate, media, and corporate world, working-class whites decidedly are not. They have among the nation's lowest upward mobility rates.
Whites aren't the only group feeling threatened in America. For many minorities, the idea that whites could feel threatened seems disingenuous. Yet Trump supporters genuinely feel under siege. We now find ourselves in an unprecedented moment of pervasive tribal anxiety. Every group feels attacked, pitted against others not just for jobs but for the right to define the nation's identity. In these conditions, democracy devolves into zero-sum group competition - pure political tribalism.
American politics has always involved identity politics in some form. Slavery and Jim Crow were identity politics for white Americans, just as the suffragette movement was for women. Yet at different times, both the American Left and Right have stood for group-transcending values. Neither does today.
Today's Left has moved far from Obama's vision of a united America. Group blindness is now considered the ultimate sin because it masks hierarchies and oppression. The Left has shifted from inclusion toward exclusion and division. Identity politics has subdivided into ever-proliferating group identities. "Intersectionality" has evolved from its original meaning to become "identity politics on steroids."
Meanwhile, the Right has embraced white identity politics in a dramatic reversal from its longtime rhetoric of color blindness. Trump's campaign exemplified this tribal turn, calling for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims," describing Mexican immigrants as "rapists," and questioning a judge's impartiality based on his Mexican heritage. Most striking is the emergence of white identity politics centered on whites as an endangered, discriminated-against group.

Finding Our Way Back to E Pluribus Unum
Despite the tribal divisions tearing America apart, efforts to cross divides and break out of political tribes are happening across the country. From Bosnian Muslims and Unitarian Christians watching the Super Bowl together in Utica, to "Make America Relate Again" meetups in New Jersey, people are reaching across divides.
Research shows that when people from different groups genuinely connect as human beings, transformation is possible. Gordon Allport's groundbreaking 1954 work demonstrated that face-to-face contact between different groups can dismantle prejudice and build common ground - findings replicated worldwide over sixty years.
The U.S. military provides perhaps the best example. Despite fierce opposition to integration, studies showed that desegregated units performed as well or better than segregated ones. As one marine from Vietnam reflected, "If I was pinned down by enemy fire and I needed an M-79 man, I'd scream for Thompson, because he was the best. I didn't even think about what color Thompson was."
Similarly, American attitudes toward same-sex marriage shifted dramatically - from 11% support in 1988 to 62% today - largely because 75% of Americans now know someone gay, compared to just 24% in 1985. As Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg observed, once people "began to say who they were," Americans found "it was your next-door neighbor or it could be your child."
However, mere exposure isn't enough - superficial contact can worsen divisions. What's needed is genuine human connection that allows people to see each other's humanity and recognize shared desires for kindness, dignity, and security.
Remaining a unified nation requires more than individual connections - we need a national identity broad enough to include Americans of all backgrounds. The real danger isn't just America failing to live up to its ideals, but Americans stopping believing in those ideals altogether - whether through the left's belief the promise was always a lie or the right's belief it has already been achieved.

It speaks to an America not rooted in blood but open to all ethnicities, a super-group where subgroup identities can flourish.
What holds America together is the American Dream - not denying past failures but recognizing them as part of our story. As Langston Hughes wrote in "Let America Be America Again," the dream was never fully realized for many ("It never was America to me"), but ends with hope: "America never was America to me, And yet I swear this oath-America will be!"
