This often results in cutting corners, rushing quality control, or abandoning innovative features. Second, insufficient resources - we rationalize that we "did the best with what we had," whether that's budget limitations, understaffing, or inadequate tools. Third, lack of experience - our vision exceeds our know-how, leading to uncertainty about execution and fear of failure. Fourth, acquiescing to committees - we dial back our vision to accommodate group judgment, often resulting in watered-down products that please no one completely. Fifth and most significant, fear - we worry about losing our job, client, or influence if we push too hard for excellence.
This pattern of drift happens naturally in product development. The first "Big Vision Meeting" brims with excitement and possibility, with teams energized by potential breakthroughs. By the second meeting, reality sets in - deadlines, budgets, limited resources. The dream gets dialed back. Stakeholders raise concerns about risk, timelines shrink, and ambitious features get relegated to "version 2.0." At this critical moment, you must decide: will you stand for the original vision or drift with the current?
Finding the courage to create wow requires specific practices: taking a stand for greatness by committing not to sell out, even when faced with pressure to compromise; reconnecting with the original vision by closing your eyes and becoming present to what you're creating; reminding yourself what's at stake for your customers and your legacy; listening to your heart and intuition when data alone isn't sufficient; speaking up to defend your ideas, especially in challenging meetings; and being stubbornly committed to excellence even when others suggest "good enough."
Mediocrity happens naturally - you don't have to do anything to drift there. It's the path of least resistance, the comfortable default that requires no courage or conviction. Creating wow experiences requires intentional effort and unwavering commitment to quality. The question is: are you willing to be brave enough to insist on excellence when everyone else is settling for "good enough"? Your answer to this question will determine not just the quality of your work, but your entire professional legacy.

First, create a professional email address using your own domain rather than outdated services like AOL or Yahoo. Second, design a balanced email signature that provides necessary information without becoming cluttered. Third, invest in quality business cards that convey essential information with style. Fourth, develop a website that creates powerful first impressions - this is your single most important branding tool. Fifth, maintain consistent branding across all social media profiles using the same logo, color palette, and fonts.
These elements create a cohesive brand identity that helps you stand out in a crowded marketplace. Remember: a compelling product plus thoughtful packaging equals a powerful first impression.

Building this team provides three key benefits: access to contacts you don't have, leverage that maximizes your impact, and freedom to focus on what you do best. But before assembling this team, you must take personal responsibility for your platform's success.
Many people feel intimidated by platform building and think they should hire someone with more marketing experience. However, this is something you must own yourself, for four primary reasons: no one knows your product better than you do; no one is more passionate about your product than you are; no one has more skin in the game than you do; and no one is likely to do it if you don't.
As you prepare to launch, your mental attitude is crucial. Thinking big isn't a gift but a skill anyone can develop. As children, we're told we can do anything, but as we grow older, we're taught to be "realistic." This becomes our internal naysayer. To overcome this, write down your dreams to transform them into goals, connect with what's at stake emotionally, outline what would have to be true to achieve your vision, determine what actions you can take, set deadlines to create urgency, and review your goals daily to maintain focus.
Don't listen to that mocking little voice telling you to be "realistic." You can either accept reality as it is or create it as you wish it to be.

A good social media strategy has three essential components. First, a Home Base - a digital property you own and control where loyal fans gather, typically a blog or website. This is where you direct all Internet traffic because it's where you can best sell ideas or products. Second, Embassies - places you don't own but have a registered profile, like Facebook or Twitter, where you engage in conversations. Third, Outposts - places you neither own nor have a regular presence, but simply listen to conversations about you, your brand, or topics of interest, using tools like HootSuite or Google Alerts.
Your blog is the heart of your home base - where your best thinking lives and where readers can interact with you. Starting one is easier than you might think, but requires commitment. Before beginning, ask yourself two critical questions: Can you generate high-quality content at least three times weekly? And will your content attract a loyal, growing audience?
When creating blog content, authenticity matters. Social media only works if communication is personal, authentic, and immediate. When a CEO approached Hyatt after a blogging seminar asking who ghostwrites his blog, he was shocked. "I don't use a ghostwriter. I write every word myself," Hyatt told him. When the executive replied he couldn't possibly find the time, Hyatt bluntly advised, "Then you shouldn't do it at all."
To create effective blog posts, use a template with five key components: a compelling lead paragraph to hook readers immediately, a relevant image, personal experience that connects through honesty, the main body with scannable content using bullets and lists, and a discussion question to start conversation. Keep posts short (around 500 words), use short paragraphs (3-4 sentences), keep sentences simple, use straightforward language, and provide internal links to other relevant content.

Your About page is likely among your most visited pages, making it a critical opportunity to connect with readers. Write in the first person with a conversational style, start with the reader's priorities rather than your bio, explain your blog's theme, set realistic expectations about posting frequency, include a subscription call-to-action, highlight your top posts, and make your contact information easily accessible.
Landing pages are another crucial element - specialized web pages designed to convert visitor interest into specific actions. Effective landing pages require seven key elements: a compelling headline, persuasive sales copy addressing customer problems, professional product photos, testimonials providing social proof, a guarantee to remove purchase risk, a well-positioned offer with strategic pricing, and a clear, prominent call to action.

If you're like most creatives, you probably hate marketing. Here's good news: marketing as we knew it is dead. In the world of social media, tribe-building is the new marketing. It's no longer about shouting in a crowded marketplace but participating in dialogue with fellow travelers. As Seth Godin defines it, a tribe is "a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea."
To build your tribe, focus first on generating quality blog content. Then implement specific strategies to increase visibility. I once saw my blog traffic jump 81.3% in just thirty days through several specific changes: switching to a faster WordPress theme, increasing posting frequency from three to five times weekly, writing shorter posts with shorter paragraphs, improving SEO metadata, and engaging more in comments.

Instead, show your face with a good headshot, create an interesting bio, share valuable content, post frequently but don't flood followers, keep tweets short enough for others to retweet, reply to others publicly, find relevant people in your industry to follow, be generous in linking and retweeting others, and avoid excessive promotion.
Facebook's massive reach (800+ million active users) also makes it essential for platform building. Rather than accepting all friend requests, distinguish between family, friends, acquaintances, and fans. Reserve your personal Facebook profile for family and close friends only, and create a separate fan page (better termed "public page") for your platform audience.
Creating consistent branding across all social platforms strengthens your identity and professional presence. Ensure these four elements remain consistent across all platforms: your name (used in exactly the same form everywhere), your logo (or distinctive type font), a professional avatar (preferably a close-up portrait), and a branding statement (slogan or tagline that represents what you're known for).
Success with your online platform will inevitably lead to opportunities in traditional media. Prepare thoroughly with briefing materials, remember the show isn't about you but the audience, understand the audience demographics, provide interviewers with questions, craft a concise elevator pitch, listen carefully to questions before answering, keep answers brief and pointed, be energetic and authentic, don't become defensive, and refer listeners back to your offering.

Engaging Your Tribe for Lasting Impact
There's hardly anything more discouraging than posting content and waiting endlessly for comments. Conversely, reader engagement is what keeps many bloggers motivated. To increase comments, end posts with an open-ended question, use a threaded comment system like Disqus to enable conversations, display comment counts prominently, make commenting easy by avoiding approval requirements, participate actively in the conversation yourself, and reward your best commenters with recognition.
As your blog grows, responding to every comment becomes impossible - and that's okay. Think of your blog as a dinner party: your content is the appetizer, the conversation between guests is the main course. As host, you don't need to respond to every comment - that would draw too much attention to yourself. Instead, be present and add value when appropriate by answering questions, clarifying points, or providing additional resources.
To keep conversations healthy and constructive, create an official comments policy that clearly states the rules, actively participate in conversations to maintain your presence, make your own comments visually distinct, and be consistent with enforcement by removing truly inappropriate comments. Good comments, even disagreements, add value to your community - but you must protect that community from those who would abuse it.
Social media platforms are relational tools, not transactional ones. They reward generosity, other-centeredness, and helpfulness - not self-promotion. Consider the 20-to-1 rule: make twenty relational deposits for every marketing withdrawal. Without adequate deposits, people will begin ignoring you and eventually disconnect.
As your platform grows, criticism becomes inevitable - and it should be. If you're saying something important, you'll likely upset the status quo. The key is distinguishing between different types of critics: True Friends offering constructive criticism to save you from yourself, Honest Critics who simply disagree without malice, and Unhealthy Trolls with agendas to hurt you. The best approach with trolls is to ignore them completely, as resistance only makes them stronger.
Finally, monetizing your blog doesn't mean compromising integrity. All professionals charge for their work. There are three primary monetization methods: selling advertising, promoting affiliates (only recommending products you actually use and believe in), and selling your own products (especially digital ones that work while you sleep). Additionally, your blog can generate leads for speaking, coaching, or consulting. The key is offering ads, products, and services that align with your brand and add value to your readers.
