George Orwell (1903–1950), geboren als Eric Arthur Blair in Britisch-Indien, war ein wegweisender britischer Romanautor und politischer Essayist, dessen dystopisches Meisterwerk 1984 das Genre durch die Untersuchung von Totalitarismus, Überwachung und sprachlicher Manipulation neu definierte.

Als ehemaliger Kolonialpolizist und Freiwilliger im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg ließ Orwell seine unmittelbaren Erfahrungen mit Armut, Propaganda und ideologischem Verrat in seine fiktionalen und sachlichen Werke einfließen. Seine früheren Werke wie Farm der Tiere (eine satirische Allegorie auf den Stalinismus) und Mein Katalonien (ein Memoir über das revolutionäre Spanien) begründeten seinen Ruf als scharfer Kritiker des Autoritarismus und Verteidiger des demokratischen Sozialismus.
