Walt Whitman (1819–1892), Autor von Grashalme (Leaves of Grass), gilt weithin als Vater des freien Verses und als einer der einflussreichsten Dichter der amerikanischen Literatur.

Diese wegweisende Gedichtsammlung, die Demokratie, Natur, Individualität und den amerikanischen Geist feiert, brach mit traditionellen Formen durch ihre kühne Erforschung von Sexualität, dem menschlichen Körper und transzendentalistischer Philosophie – Themen, die im Amerika des 19. Jahrhunderts als skandalös galten.

Geboren auf Long Island, arbeitete Whitman als Journalist, Lehrer und Krankenpfleger im Bürgerkrieg, bevor er 1855 Grashalme mit nur 12 Gedichten im Selbstverlag veröffentlichte. Er erweiterte und überarbeitete die Sammlung kontinuierlich in acht Ausgaben bis zu seinem Tod.

Ralph Waldo Emerson feierte die erste Ausgabe als „das außergewöhnlichste Stück Witz und Weisheit, das Amerika bisher beigetragen hat“.
