When Casiopea awakens in her hotel room, she finds Martin weeping, terrified of their grandfather's wrath. Though she assures him their grandfather won't kill him, Martin remains distraught. He apologizes for his cruelty toward her, acknowledging his terrible behavior. Casiopea can't forgive him instantly but suggests he needn't return to Uukumil if he doesn't want to. They part ways with a simple "so long," which Casiopea realizes is more satisfying than any revenge fantasy. After Martin leaves for Guadalajara, Casiopea packs her belongings. She visits Hun-Kame's empty room, touching his clothes but finding nothing of him remains. Outside, she finds Loray waiting with an automobile. He delivers black pearls from Hun-Kame, fulfilling the god's promise, and offers her a ride. When Loray mentions heading to a French-speaking place like New Orleans or Quebec, Casiopea considers joining him. Despite her sadness at losing Hun-Kame, she doesn't wish to "wither away"-she wants to truly live. She asks Loray to teach her to drive, and they stop in the middle of the desert road to switch places. As she starts the automobile moving, Casiopea smiles, embarking on a new journey. The novel ends with this image of Casiopea taking control of her own destiny-literally taking the wheel. Though she has lost Hun-Kame, she has gained something perhaps more valuable: the confidence and freedom to chart her own course. Her journey with the death god has transformed her from a resentful servant into a woman who understands her own worth and power.
