For those not in Christ, sins evoke holy wrath. But for those who belong to him, sins evoke holy longing, love, and tenderness. As Goodwin explains, our sins move Christ to pity more than to anger. He takes our side against our sin, not against us because of our sin. Like a father hating a disease while loving his afflicted child, Christ's hatred falls on the sin while his affections are drawn out to us. Intercession (Hebrews 7:25) is something Christ always does given our general sinfulness, while advocacy (1 John 2:1) is something he does when occasion calls for it-specifically when we commit particular sins. The Father's Heart of Mercy

The word for "mercies" appears alongside "compassionate" in James 5:11, showing God is "much compassionate" toward his "needful, wayward, messy, fallen, wandering people." When God shows mercy, he acts in accord with his deepest self. The text connects God's rich mercy with his "great love." As Thomas Goodwin explains, divine love isn't mere forbearance or patience but something deeper and more active. It surges forward when the beloved is threatened, even by their own folly. God's love is "invincible"-as love rises in his heart, mercy flows out from it. The mercy of God reaches down to both immoral and moral dead people. Ephesians 2:1-3 describes our desperate condition-we were dead in sin, following Satan, living in the passions of our flesh, and children of wrath by nature. In Christ, God's love becomes invincible-we are seated with Christ in heaven (Ephesians 2:6), making us as eternally secure as Christ himself.

John 13:1 launches the passion narrative with a powerful statement: "Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end." Christ's love isn't like an arrow that falls to the ground or a runner who falters, but like an avalanche gathering momentum or a wildfire growing in intensity. This love is specifically for "his own"-true disciples whom he prizes more than all the world. Christ loved his own through death itself, which means two things for believers: First, your future is secure-you cannot be made "un-his." Second, he will love you to the end-through your sins, temptations, and fears, with no exit strategy. Unlike our conditional love that retreats when betrayed, Jesus has set his heart upon us without requiring any "beauteousness" in us to maintain his love.

Come to Me

What are we to do with this knowledge of Christ's heart? The main answer is: nothing. To ask how to apply it would trivialize the point. Like an Eskimo on a sunny vacation, we don't apply it-we simply enjoy it. We bask in it. But there is one thing Jesus tells us to do in Matthew 11:28: "Come to me." As Goodwin explains, what keeps us from Christ is not knowing his mind and heart. "He is more glad of us than we can be of him." The Christian life boils down to two steps: 1) Go to Jesus, and 2) See #1. Whatever is crumbling around you, his heart remains gentle and lowly. That place where you feel most defeated is where he lives, and his heart for you in that darkness is gentle and lowly. Your anguish is his home. Jonathan Edwards preached that "The creation of the world seems to have been especially for this end, that the eternal Son of God might obtain a spouse... to whom he might open and pour forth all that immense fountain of condescension, love, and grace that was in his heart." Christ's heart is like a dammed-up river ready to burst forth with infinite benevolence. Human history is his opportunity to unleash this flood of kindness. In heaven, we will see not only Christ's "infinite majesty and greatness" but also his "infinite grace, condescension and mildness, and gentleness and sweetness." We will "swim in the ocean of love, and be eternally swallowed up" in the beams of divine love. Ephesians 2:7 reveals that our sin isn't an obstacle to enjoying heaven but the key ingredient. Whatever mess we've made of our lives becomes part of our final glory as it magnifies God's grace. If God's grace is "immeasurable riches," our sins can never exhaust his heart. For those in Christ, this life is the worst it will ever get. In eternity, we'll descend ever deeper into God's grace, seeing it as truly beyond understanding.
