Imagine a world where everyone exists as two-dimensional shapes, moving freely on a flat surface but unable to perceive height, depth, or anything beyond their planar existence. This is the premise of Edwin A. Abbott's remarkable novella "Flatland," published in 1884 under the pseudonym "A Square." What began as a Victorian mathematical curiosity has evolved into a cultural touchstone, influencing generations of scientists, mathematicians, and philosophers. Einstein reportedly kept a copy on his nightstand while developing his theories of relativity, and Carl Sagan used its concepts to explain higher dimensions in his groundbreaking series "Cosmos." The book's enduring appeal lies in its dual nature-simultaneously a mathematical exploration of dimensions and a biting satire of Victorian social hierarchy, making it as relevant today as it was nearly 140 years ago.

The Nature of a Two-Dimensional Universe
I call our world Flatland-a vast paper-like sheet where geometric figures move freely on the surface but cannot rise above or sink below it. In this peculiar reality, nothing truly "solid" exists. We see only straight Lines of varying brightness, nothing more. Without shadows or perspective, all figures-whether Triangles, Squares, or Pentagons-appear merely as lines when viewed from within our two-dimensional plane.
Our climate lacks celestial bodies, yet we determine direction through a natural southward attraction serving as our compass. Rain falls exclusively from the North, and our pentagonal houses feature walls running North-South to provide additional guidance. These homes typically include two Northern sides forming the roof, an East door for Women, and a larger West door for Men. Square and triangular houses are prohibited because their sharp angles pose dangers to travelers, with triangular structures banned since the eleventh century and squares heavily taxed until pentagonal construction became standard even in rural areas.
Navigation in Flatland requires extraordinary care. Without the benefit of a third dimension, collision is a constant danger. We cannot simply step over one another as you might in your world. Instead, we must carefully maneuver around each other, using our natural sense of direction and the strict architectural guidelines that govern our settlements. The constant rain from the North creates additional challenges, though it helps maintain our sense of orientation even in unfamiliar territory.
The absence of a third dimension affects everything from our architecture to our most basic daily activities. Consider something as simple as entering a house-in your world, you might approach a door from any angle, but in Flatland, precise alignment is essential. A misaligned approach could result in a dangerous collision with a wall rather than safe passage through a doorway.

The Rigid Social Hierarchy of Flatland
Our society follows a strict geometric hierarchy that would make even the most class-conscious Victorian blush. At the bottom are the Women-straight lines with dangerous points at both ends. Above them rise the Isosceles Triangles forming our Soldier and Workman classes, then Equilateral Triangles of the Middle Class. Professional Men and Gentlemen like myself are Squares or Pentagons, while above us ascends the Nobility, beginning with Hexagons and progressing through increasing sides until reaching the Circular or Priestly order-our highest class.
By Natural Law, a male child has one more side than his father, ensuring generational advancement. However, this rule applies less frequently to Tradesmen and rarely to Soldiers and Workmen, who remain Isosceles Triangles. Yet through military success or diligent labor, the more intelligent lower classes may develop a slightly longer base and produce offspring closer to Equilateral form. The rare birth of a True Equilateral from Isosceles parents occasions great celebration, with the child removed from its parents and adopted by childless Equilaterals.
This system of occasional advancement serves as a useful barrier against revolution. The most intelligent of the lower classes gain hope while simultaneously losing their physical dangerousness as their angles become less acute. The system maintains stability while allowing for limited social mobility-just enough to prevent the dangerous accumulation of resentment among those with the intelligence to organize resistance.
What's particularly fascinating about this arrangement is how it naturalizes inequality. The physical form of each citizen-their very geometry-determines their social standing. Unlike in your world, where external markers of class can be changed or disguised, in Flatland, one's shape is immutable destiny. This creates a society where hierarchy isn't just accepted but seen as the natural order of things, embedded in the very fabric of existence.

The Dangerous and Diminished Status of Women
Our Women are straight lines-essentially needles with points at both ends-making them far more dangerous than even our sharpest triangular Soldiers. They possess the ability to become practically invisible by turning their endpoints toward an observer, showing only a lustrous point. This invisibility creates tremendous hazard, as collision with a Woman means certain death for the unfortunate male who encounters her sharp end.
To minimize this peril, our laws mandate that every house must have an Eastern entrance for Females only; no Female may walk in public without continuously keeping up her Peace-cry; and any Female with involuntary movements must be immediately destroyed. Some states impose additional restrictions, though excessive regulation tends to increase domestic violence. Our principal safeguard lies in Women's self-interest (as they risk shattering themselves when attacking) and in Fashion, which dictates the rhythmical undulation of their backs to signal their presence.
Despite their deadliness, Women lack angles and thus possess no brain-power-having neither reflection, judgment, forethought, nor memory. Their passionate nature makes them dangerous when irritated, though they become harmless in properly constructed apartments where they cannot turn around.
The contradiction in our society's treatment of Women is striking. They are simultaneously feared for their deadly potential and dismissed as intellectually inferior. This paradox leads to elaborate systems of control-architectural constraints, behavioral regulations, and social customs all designed to manage the perceived threat while reinforcing their subordinate position. Women are denied education not merely as a matter of tradition but as a deliberate policy to maintain their intellectual limitations.
What's most troubling is how this arrangement perpetuates itself. With each generation, Women become less intellectually capable, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy that justifies their continued subordination. The denial of education ensures they remain "irrational and emotional," which in turn justifies further restrictions on their liberty and development.

Recognition and Identification in a Linear World
In Flatland, all beings appear as straight Lines to our view, creating extreme difficulty in recognition. We rely primarily on three methods of identification: hearing, feeling, and sight recognition.
Hearing is far more developed in Flatland than in your world and allows us to distinguish voices of friends and different classes. However, this method becomes less reliable among higher classes due to voice assimilation and because voice-discrimination is considered a plebeian virtue. Furthermore, Isosceles can be trained to imitate the voices of higher classes, even Circles, making additional methods necessary.
Feeling is particularly important among Women and lower classes. While "introduction" serves your world, "feeling" serves us in Flatland. Through training, we can instantly determine class by feeling a single angle, though distinguishing higher Polygons requires greater expertise. This process demands care, as fidgeting or startling during feeling can cause fatal injuries, especially with rough-natured Triangles whose vertices are far from their eyes.
Sight Recognition, practiced among higher classes in temperate climates, relies on the blessing of Fog, which pervades our land most of the year. Unlike in your world where fog is considered a nuisance, we revere it as the nurse of arts and parent of sciences. The fog creates varying degrees of dimness based on distance, allowing us to infer configurations with remarkable precision through careful observation of these differences.
This skill requires extensive training and experience, particularly for complex scenarios involving multiple moving Polygons. The challenges of Sight Recognition justify the rich endowments of Geometry Professors at Wentbridge University, where this art is formally taught to elite students. For common Tradesmen, a crowd of rotating Polygons is bewildering, which is why "Feeling" is discouraged or forbidden among Higher Classes who are expected to master the more sophisticated art of "Seeing."
What's fascinating about these recognition systems is how they reinforce social divisions. The methods of identification themselves become markers of class, with the elite practicing Sight Recognition while the lower orders rely on the more primitive method of Feeling. Even our sensory experiences are stratified according to social position.

The Threat of Irregularity to Social Order
In Flatland, "Irregularity of Figure" represents far more than mere geometric imperfection - it stands as a fundamental threat to social stability and moral order. The connection between physical regularity and moral virtue runs deep through our society, where the equality of sides appropriate to one's class is not just aesthetically pleasing but considered essential for maintaining social harmony. Nature herself seems to favor Regularity, as evidenced by the predominance of regular shapes in our population, while Law reinforces this natural order through strict regulations and penalties.
Some social reformers argue that this connection between physical form and moral worth is artificially constructed. They point to the cruel cycle that traps Irregulars from birth: identified and marked by inspectors, shunned by their own families, denied education in the better schools, restricted to the most menial government positions, and legally barred from marriage. These advocates claim that society creates the very problems it claims to solve through its harsh treatment of Irregulars.
However, the wisest Statesmen and social philosophers present compelling practical arguments for maintaining strict standards of Regularity. Consider the daily chaos that would ensue if Irregularity became commonplace: a Tradesman with an unexpected twelve-inch protrusion would create havoc in narrow doorways and corridors. In crowded marketplaces, where citizens rely on precise geometric calculations to navigate safely, an Irregular shape could cause countless collisions, injuries, or even deaths. More insidiously, those with asymmetrical forms - perhaps triangular from one angle but polygonal from another - could perpetrate widespread fraud, deceiving merchants and undermining the trust essential to commerce.
The treatment of Irregular offspring varies across different States. Some regions practice immediate destruction for even minimal deviations - a policy I consider excessive. Others advocate for complete tolerance, which history has shown leads to social instability and increased crime rates. I propose a more measured approach: when the Medical Board, after thorough examination, determines that an Irregular infant has no prospect of achieving acceptable Regularity through treatment, the most humane course is painless consumption, preventing a lifetime of suffering and social disruption.
This fixation on Regularity reveals profound societal anxieties about order and control. Irregularity represents not just physical difference but the specter of chaos threatening to unravel our meticulously ordered society. The harsh treatment of Irregulars - from systematic discrimination to legal restrictions to physical elimination - reflects deep-seated fears about social stability and control. When we see an Irregular, we don't just see a geometric anomaly; we see a challenge to the fundamental principles that organize our world.
The equation of physical regularity with moral worth has created a society where prejudice is not merely widespread but institutionalized. Laws, customs, and social practices all reinforce the idea that geometric perfection equals moral virtue, while any deviation signals moral corruption. This system perpetuates itself through education, social pressure, and legal enforcement, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy where Irregulars, denied opportunities and respect, often fulfill the very stereotypes used to justify their oppression.
Kapitel 7
The Color Revolt: A Failed Revolution
Tradition speaks of a golden age when Color briefly enhanced our ancestors' lives. A Pentagon named Chromatistes accidentally discovered color components and rudimentary painting, decorating first his house, then slaves, family, and finally himself. The innovation proved immediately practical-his variegated frame eliminated the need for others to "feel" him, prevented confusion between front and back, and made his movements easily discernible.
The fashion spread rapidly-within a week every Square and Triangle in the district had adopted it, within months even conservative Dodecagons joined, and within two years only Women and Priests remained colorless. Those ancient days of the Colour Revolt represented the glorious childhood of Art in Flatland. Living meant seeing, and even small gatherings became visual delights.
Revolutionary leaders advanced their demands, requiring all classes-even Priests and Women-to be painted. When objected that these groups had no sides, revolutionaries argued that Nature and Expediency dictated the front half (containing eye and mouth) of every human should be distinguishable from their hinder half. They proposed legislation requiring Women's front halves be colored red and back halves green, with Priests painted similarly.
This cunning proposal came from an Irregular Circle who escaped childhood destruction. It aimed to bring Women to the revolutionaries' side by ensuring they would appear like Priests from certain angles, granting them corresponding respect. The Bill's second objective was demoralizing the Circles themselves by forcing color pollution upon them and destroying their pure, colorless homes that facilitated training in Sight Recognition.
The agitation lasted three years, with anarchy seemingly poised to triumph. The crisis reached its peak when an incident dramatically shifted public sentiment: a low-type Isosceles, painting himself with twelve colors of a Dodecahedron, deceived and married a noble Polygon's orphan daughter. Upon discovering the deception, she committed suicide. This catastrophe agitated Women across Flatland, making them fear similar deceptions and turning many against the Colour Bill.
Seizing this opportunity, the Circles convened an extraordinary Assembly with reactionary Women present. Chief Circle Pantocyclus silenced the opposition by announcing acceptance of the Colour Bill, then invited Chromatistes, the sedition leader, to receive the Hierarchy's submission. At a prearranged signal, Isosceles Convicts killed Chromatistes while Women attacked the Soldiers from behind. Within half an hour, 140,000 Criminals lay dead. The Circles decimated Working Men, executed suspected Irregular Triangles without measurement, and systematically purged excess lower orders through nationwide visitations.
Color was abolished, its possession prohibited, and even words denoting Color severely penalized. Only the Chief Circle knows the art of making Color, passing it to his successor alone. Even now, the Aristocracy looks back with terror at the Universal Colour Bill agitation.
Kapitel 8
The Priestly Circle: Ultimate Authority
Our Circles or Priests are far more than religious leaders-they administer all Business, Art, and Science; direct Trade, Commerce, Generalship, Architecture, Engineering, Education, Statesmanship, Legislature, Morality, and Theology. Doing nothing themselves, they cause everything worth doing that others do.
Though commonly called Circles, educated classes know no Circle is truly circular but rather a Polygon with numerous tiny sides. The more sides, the closer to a Circle it becomes. With three or four hundred sides, even the most delicate touch struggles to feel any angles-though such touching would be considered an audacious insult among high society. This abstention from Feeling helps Circles maintain mystery about their exact Perimeter. By courtesy, the Chief Circle is assumed to have ten thousand sides.
The Circles' doctrine can be summarized in one maxim: "Attend to your Configuration." All their teaching aims to improve individual and collective Configuration, especially that of Circles, to which all else is subordinated. Pantocyclus first convinced mankind that Configuration makes the man-that Isosceles with uneven sides must have them equalized at hospitals, and any Irregularity must be cured, or one will end in prison or execution.
Pantocyclus attributed all faults to deviations from perfect Regularity, whether congenital or caused by collisions, improper exercise, or temperature changes. Therefore, neither good nor bad conduct deserves praise or blame-why praise a Square's integrity when you should admire his precise Rectangles?
Though theoretically sound, this doctrine has practical drawbacks. In criminal cases, an Isosceles pleading his unevenness as excuse for theft is simply sentenced to consumption. But domestic situations prove more complex-when my Hexagonal Grandson blames his Configuration for disobedience and suggests sweetmeats as remedy, I find myself in a logical quandary, though I still administer scoldings.

Encountering the Third Dimension
It was the last day of the 1999th year of our era when my life changed forever. I sat with my wife as rain pattered outside, contemplating the coming Millennium. Earlier that day, my brilliant young Hexagon grandson had asked a perplexing question about what 33 would mean in Geometry. I had dismissed it as nonsense, explaining that Geometry has only Two Dimensions.
As midnight approached, I suddenly felt a Presence and heard a voice declare "33 has an obvious Geometrical meaning." Before us appeared a Figure that at first glance resembled a Woman seen sideways, but changed size impossibly. My Wife, with typical feminine hastiness, assumed a Woman had entered our house. When she approached the stranger, she discovered it was "a perfect Circle"-or rather, as the Voice explained, "many Circles in one."
This Stranger revealed he came from "Space"-a realm with Three Dimensions: height, breadth, and length. He claimed to come from the "Land of Three Dimensions" from which he could see all of Flatland-our houses, churches, even our insides-lying exposed. To prove his assertions, he described my household in detail-my four Pentagon Sons, two Hexagon Grandsons, three Isosceles servants, and the Page.
When I remained skeptical, the Sphere demonstrated his ability to see inside closed objects in Flatland, describing the contents of my locked cupboard-boxes of money and tablets of accounts-then descended into it without opening the doors. When he emerged with one of my tablets, I rushed to verify and found it indeed missing. Still resistant, I attempted to pin him against the wall while calling for help, but the Sphere threatened consequences. When I refused to release him, he thundered, "Then meet your fate: out of your Plane you go. Once, twice, thrice! 'Tis done!"
Kapitel 10
Transcending Dimensions: A Mind-Altering Journey
An unspeakable horror seized me as I experienced a dizzy sensation unlike seeing-perceiving a Line that was no Line and Space that was not Space. When I shrieked that this must be madness or Hell, the Sphere calmly replied, "It is Knowledge; it is Three Dimensions."
Looking again, I beheld a new world of perfect Circular beauty. I could see the center of the Stranger's form, though not his internal organs. The Sphere showed me my own Pentagonal house from above, allowing me to see all its inhabitants simultaneously-my sleeping Sons, my Grandsons, the Servants, and my anxious Wife roving the Hall. This was seeing, not merely inferring.
As we rose higher, my native city lay open in miniature, revealing the interior of every house and creature. Rising further, even the secrets of the earth and depths of mines became visible. Awestruck, I declared myself "become as a God" with omnividence, but the Sphere scornfully noted that even pickpockets in his country could see as much.
Unable to continue passively learning, I interrupted the Sphere's lessons on regular Solids to make a bold request-to see his interior. Using the Sphere's own teachings of analogy, I reasoned: a moving Point creates a Line with two terminals, a moving Line creates a Square with four terminals, a moving Square creates a Cube with eight terminals-therefore a moving Cube must create a divine organization with sixteen terminals.
Despite the Sphere's growing anger, I continued my logical progression, even suggesting beings from higher dimensions must have already visited Spaceland. When the Sphere reluctantly admitted such visitations had been reported, I begged again to visit this higher realm. My ecstatic aspirations were cut short by a crash that sent me hurtling back to Flatland, once more a common Square in my study.

The Prophet's Burden: Spreading Dimensional Truth
After my return to Flatland, I dedicated myself to spreading the gospel of the Third Dimension. I began with my precocious Hexagonal Grandson, whose mathematical aptitude and youth made him an ideal first pupil. Unfortunately, just as I attempted to demonstrate by moving a Square "Upward," my clumsy explanation and gestures only amused him. Laughing, he declared I was joking rather than teaching, and ran from the room-ending my first conversion attempt.
Undeterred by my failure, I turned to writing, spending months composing a treatise on Three Dimensions. To evade the law, I described a theoretical "Thoughtland" rather than a physical dimension. But I struggled with the limitations of Flatland diagrams-mere lines distinguishable only by size and brightness-leaving me uncertain if readers would comprehend my "Through Flatland to Thoughtland."
Meanwhile, I lived under a cloud of melancholy, comparing everything I saw in Two Dimensions with its true Three-Dimensional nature. My mental vision of the Cube began to fade, deepening my despair. Though willing to sacrifice my life for the Cause, I couldn't even convince my Grandson.
Eventually, I grew careless, making suspicious utterances in high society about "seeing the interiors of things" and even mentioning "the Third and Fourth Dimensions." My final indiscretion came at the Speculative Society meeting in the Prefect's palace, where I passionately recounted my journey with the Sphere and urged everyone to believe in the Third Dimension.
I was immediately arrested. At my trial, I committed myself to Truth and was sentenced to perpetual imprisonment. Despite seven years of explaining Spaceland to my Square brother during his weekly visits, he still disbelieves in the Third Dimension. I remain without converts, imprisoned like Prometheus, hoping these memoirs might somehow reach minds in Some Dimension and inspire rebellion against limited Dimensionality.
In darker moments, I doubt even my own memories of the Cube, and the mysterious words "Upward, not Northward" haunt me. Sometimes even Flatland itself seems merely a dream.
