It embodies a preference for self-control, tight budgets, small teams, short schedules, brief meetings, and concise documents. While there's a point where an organization isn't large enough to do the work or a document doesn't convey necessary information, we typically could get much closer to that boundary than we do.
Elegant means "pleasingly ingenious and simple." Despite many people's love affair with complexity, having a low level of complexity is both important and good. True sophistication and maturity are shown through deep simplicity, not brain-melting complexity. While some complexity is inevitable, we can take steps to minimize it-not merely simplifying for simplicity's sake, but improving quality, performance, or usability through elegant design.
Unlike rule-based approaches that demand compliance, FIRE's flexible guidelines suggest rather than dictate, drawing wisdom from the practitioner rather than imposing it. This approach acknowledges that the person doing the work is ultimately the source of goodness, focusing on outcomes rather than compliance.

Constraints don't limit creativity-they unleash it. When resources are limited, we're forced to consider alternatives to typical solutions. Constraints-temporal, financial, physical-take obvious approaches off the table and lead us toward non-obvious, often more creative and focused solutions.
Consider how clear priorities and activities oriented toward an overarching objective allow things to move quickly with minimal time expenditure. Keeping objectives in sharp focus strips away distractions that slow us down. A key FIRE discipline is maintaining a small list of Most Important Things-no more than three-to prevent getting bogged down and perpetually late.
The timing of projects also matters tremendously. If we don't plan to acquire something for a decade, we probably don't truly need it. Short-term due dates indicate greater legitimacy than long-term ones, as they typically reflect a clear understanding of a capability gap.
With firm deadlines, the only way to add time is at the beginning. We can "start before we start" by constantly playing and experimenting, maintaining a collection of sketches, ideas, and prototypes to draw from when requests emerge. We can also leverage existing work rather than starting from scratch-using commercial off-the-shelf components in new ways.
Schedule delays increase exposure to change as new technologies, threats, people, and economic realities place new demands on projects. Addressing these demands takes time, exposing the project to even more changes, creating a death spiral. Additionally, Parkinson's Law tells us work expands to fill time allotted, so adding time becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Expensive projects attract more attention and "help" from various entities in the hierarchy. Smaller budgets correlate with autonomy; below certain thresholds, projects simply don't appear prestigious or risky enough to merit senior management attention.
Making something complicated requires effort, not skill. A truly sophisticated design minimizes complexity, removing unnecessary, redundant components while ensuring remaining ones contribute positively to the objective. Streamlining and trimming are as important as additive behaviors.

Years of brainstorming have conditioned us to associate adding things with rewards, creating a tendency toward bloated designs and excessive features. Stormdraining follows five rules: everything is eligible for removal; deletion is the default action; build on others' deletions to identify more removable elements; make deletion fun and celebrate it; and truly delete things rather than setting them aside.
While most creative activities are additive, reductive thinking approaches creation through subtraction. Like whittling or sculpting, it starts with a block containing all the atoms of the final product, then removes material to reveal the desired form. This approach aligns perfectly with FIRE's emphasis on simplicity. As Michelangelo suggested, the tool's purpose is to remove material and reveal what was already there.

Speed and agility triumph over sheer mass and firepower-just as Superman would defeat a Death Star. When we build only essential functions and include only necessary components, we discover a deep simplicity that fosters quality, reliability and usability.
