The devaluations by England and the U.S. had their intended effects - prices stopped falling, money supplies grew, and unemployment declined. Beyond these major theaters, numerous other fronts are unfolding globally. Brazil represents the most prominent of these peripheral battles. From 2009-2010, the real appreciated 40% against the dollar, devastating Brazilian exports. Finance Minister Guido Mantega declared a "global currency war" in September 2010.
Brazil fought back with central bank intervention and capital controls, but like many emerging markets, it faced the dilemma of choosing between inflation and currency appreciation. By April 2011, Brazil was "waving the white flag" after controls failed to stop the real's rise.
