Imperial Purple: The Color of Power and Passion

The discovery of modern purple dye began with an accident that changed the world of color. In 1856, eighteen-year-old William Henry Perkin was working at the Royal College of Chemistry, where he and his classmates sought a synthetic alternative to quinine for treating malaria. While washing his glass flasks one evening in his home laboratory in London's East End, Perkin noticed a black residue that, when dissolved, produced "a strangely beautiful color"-not blue as I had once imagined, but mauve. In Byblos (Jbail), I explored ancient Phoenician ruins with my guide Hyame. The Phoenicians-whose very name derives from the Greek word for purple-were tiny people who lived in houses accessed by ladders. Their bustling marketplace once sold papyrus scrolls (giving both Byblos and the Bible their names) alongside precious goods including purple dye. This coveted color adorned the holiest Jewish temples and was prized by Persian kings. The symbolism of purple reflects a tension between power and sensuality. It was the color of royalty and priesthood but also of Bacchanalian revelry-the wine-stained mouth and Homer's dangerous wine-dark sea. When Julius Caesar conquered Egypt, Cleopatra seduced him in a palace lined with purple porphyry stone, with purple-dyed couches. Impressed, Caesar later introduced the all-purple toga in Rome-an item only he could wear. I traveled to Tyre to discover how the famous purple dye was made. Staying at the aptly named Hotel Murex, I examined a shell of Murex trunculus-about the size of a triple-scoop ice cream with sharp spines. Tyre today is built upon layers of ruins-ancient and modern destruction blended together. Later excavations revealed an entire Roman town with a triumphal archway, necropolis, hippodrome, and most importantly for my quest, murex dye vats. These vats, strategically placed on the windward edge of town to blow away the stench, were about the size of dining tables and deep enough for a man to stand waist-deep. Despite their historical importance, they seemed forgotten among fallen columns and weeds, separated from the "nice" parts of the archaeological site that tourists typically visit. My search for true "Tyrian" purple led me unexpectedly back to England, where I met John Edmonds, a dyer who had experimented with ancient techniques. He introduced me to the fascinating story of tekhelet-the sacred blue used in Jewish prayer shawl tassels (tsitsit). For 1,300 years after the Muslim conquests, Jews had no proper blue for their tsitsit. The knowledge had been lost, likely because Jewish dyers kept the formula secret. Ironically, this sacred Jewish blue comes from shellfish-among the least kosher of sources. At a conference demonstration, Edmonds and artist Inge Boesken-Kanold showed both vivid purple and sky blue from the same source, revealing how these ancient colors weren't truly lost, just waiting to be rediscovered.
