Oliver Wolf Sacks (1933–2015) war ein renommierter Neurologe und Bestsellerautor von Awakenings (Zeit des Erwachens), einem Meilenstein der medizinischen Erzählkunst und klinischen Fallgeschichte, der ihm von der New York Times den Titel „Poet Laureate der Medizin“ einbrachte. Das 1973 veröffentlichte Werk Awakenings schildert seine Erfahrungen im Beth Abraham Hospital in der Bronx, wo er das experimentelle Medikament L-Dopa einsetzte, um Patienten vorübergehend zu reanimieren, die infolge der mysteriösen Encephalitis-lethargica-Epidemie von 1916–1927 jahrzehntelang in katatonen Zuständen erstarrt waren.

Geboren in London als Sohn einer Medizinerfamilie, erwarb Sacks seinen medizinischen Abschluss am Queen's College in Oxford und lehrte als Professor an der Columbia University sowie der NYU School of Medicine. Sein einfühlsamer Ansatz des neurologischen Erzählens prägte gefeierte Werke wie Der Mann, der seine Frau mit einem Hut verwechselte, Musicophilia und Eine Anthropologin auf dem Mars.
