Der 1971 in Virginia geborene amerikanisch-britische Schriftsteller vollendete diese tief bewegende Geschichte basierend auf Notizen der irischen Autorin Siobhan Dowd, die an Krebs verstarb, bevor sie das Werk beenden konnte. Ness' einfühlsame Art, die psychologische Reise eines Kindes durch eine unheilbare Krankheit darzustellen, spiegelt seine umfassende Expertise in der Gestaltung emotional komplexer Erzählungen für junge Leser wider.
