The Ogoni, a small ethnic group of about 500,000 people in Rivers State, had organized under Saro-Wiwa's Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) to demand greater autonomy, environmental protection, and a fair share of oil revenues extracted from their lands. After Abacha's death, General Abdulsalami Abubakar quickly dissolved the five political parties, released political prisoners, and set Nigeria on a path to democratic transition.
