Ken Segall is an American creative director, branding strategist, and author best known for helping shape Apple’s marketing, including the “Think Different” campaign and the iMac name. Drawing on decades in advertising, he wrote Insanely Simple and Think Simple, influential books on branding, leadership, and the business value of simplicity.
Ken Segall, born in Detroit in 1950 and educated at Penn State University, did not begin with a straight path toward advertising. His own account of his early life starts with an ambition to become a drummer, followed by a string of practical jobs—flipping burgers on the Jersey Shore, working as a bank teller, and filing papers in a Los Angeles agency—before a copywriting course pulled him toward a creative career. An early job on Smirnoff gave him a foothold, an early firing gave him perspective, and the combination eventually steered him toward the technology sector, where his instinct for clarity and naming would become distinctive.
