His own account of his early life starts with an ambition to become a drummer, followed by a string of practical jobs—flipping burgers on the Jersey Shore, working as a bank teller, and filing papers in a Los Angeles agency—before a copywriting course pulled him toward a creative career. An early job on Smirnoff gave him a foothold, an early firing gave him perspective, and the combination eventually steered him toward the technology sector, where his instinct for clarity and naming would become distinctive.
