Hannah Arendt

Geboren: October 14, 1906 – Linden, Hanover, Germany

Hannah Arendt was a German-born Jewish political theorist and philosopher whose work examined totalitarianism, authority, violence, and the conditions of modern civic life. Her best-known books include The Origins of Totalitarianism, The Human Condition, and Eichmann in Jerusalem. Her writings profoundly shaped twentieth-century political thought and remain widely translated and taught worldwide.

Biografie & Werdegang des Autors

Hannah Arendt was born in 1906 in Linden, near Hanover, and grew up largely in Königsberg in a secular Jewish family marked by intellectual seriousness and political awareness. Her father died when she was young, and her mother encouraged both independence and rigorous study. Arendt came of age in the turbulent aftermath of the First World War and studied philosophy, theology, and classical philology at Marburg, Freiburg, and Heidelberg. Her education brought her into contact with some of the most important German thinkers of the era, including Martin Heidegger, Edmund Husserl, and, most decisively, Karl Jaspers, under whom she completed her doctoral dissertation. These early years established the habits that would define her later work: close reading, historical breadth, and a refusal to separate abstract ideas from political reality.
