He began writing as a child, earned his degree from Dublin University, and worked as a primary school teacher before becoming a full-time author. A formative stretch abroad with his wife in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Italy broadened his imaginative range; his first book, Benny and Omar, published in 1998, drew on those experiences.
