Biografie & Werdegang des Autors

Candice Millard is an American narrative historian whose work combines archival rigor with the pacing of adventure writing. Raised in Lexington, Ohio, she grew up in a small, working-class town and later moved to the Kansas City area as a teenager when her father changed jobs. At Baker University she studied English on a journalism scholarship, wrote for the student newspaper, and found mentors who sharpened her sense of language and structure. She then earned a master’s degree in literature from Baylor University. A decisive early turning point came with her move to Washington, where she joined National Geographic. There, over roughly six years as an editor and writer, she developed the habits that would define her later books: exhaustive research, respect for primary sources, and a conviction that history becomes vivid when told through people rather than abstractions.
