Neil deGrasse Tyson

Born: October 5, 1958 – New York City, New York, United States

Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist, author, and widely recognized science communicator noted for making complex scientific topics accessible to the general public. As director of the Hayden Planetarium since 1996, he has authored bestselling books like Astrophysics for People in a Hurry and hosted influential programs, significantly advancing public engagement with science.

Biography & Author's Journey

Neil deGrasse Tyson was born in New York City in 1958, captivated by the wonders of the cosmos from a young age. His early fascination with astronomy began at just nine years old, when a visit to the Hayden Planetarium sparked a lifelong passion for the universe. Tyson’s academic journey reflected his commitment; after attending the Bronx High School of Science, he earned his bachelor’s degree in physics at Harvard University, master’s degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and Columbia University, and ultimately a Ph.D. in astrophysics from Columbia in 1991. As a young scholar, he was noted and encouraged by Carl Sagan, but Tyson charted his own path, consistently returning to New York to further his research and public engagement.

quote
Recognize that the very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules, are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centers of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds with the chemistry of life. So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically. That’s kinda cool!
