Linda Elder is an educational psychologist and author focused on critical thinking, reasoning, and the relationship between thought and emotion. As president of the Foundation for Critical Thinking, she coauthored Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of Your Professional and Personal Life, wrote Liberating the Mind, and has presented to more than 50,000 educators.
Linda Elder’s professional background was shaped early by work with vulnerable populations in Memphis. She began in 1983 at Youth Services, a nonprofit that helped troubled youth avoid prison or juvenile detention, and later headed a program for displaced homemakers at Southwest Tennessee Community College. Alongside that work, she completed an M.A. in psychology in 1988 and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Memphis in 1990. Teaching psychology at the college level then became a decisive turning point: it was during those years that she encountered the study of critical thinking and began treating it as a practical response to persistent problems in human judgment and behavior.
