Kevin D. Mitnick

Born: August 06, 1963 – Van Nuys, California, United States

Kevin D. Mitnick was an American cybersecurity author, consultant, and former hacker whose work focused on social engineering, computer security, and privacy. He wrote Ghost in the Wires, The Art of Deception, and The Art of Intrusion, influential books that helped popularize public awareness of human-centered security vulnerabilities.

Biography & Author's Journey

Kevin D. Mitnick was born in Van Nuys, California, on August 6, 1963, and came of age in Los Angeles just as phone networks and early computing were becoming objects of fascination for technically curious teenagers. Largely self-taught, he later said his real education came from learning how systems worked and how people could be persuaded to bypass them. One of his earliest exploits, done as a boy, involved mastering Los Angeles bus transfers; that mix of curiosity, improvisation, and social manipulation foreshadowed a career that would make him one of the most recognizable figures in hacker culture. He graduated cum laude in computer systems and programming from a Los Angeles technical college in 1985.
