John Grinder is an American linguist, consultant, and writer best known for co-creating neuro-linguistic programming with Richard Bandler. His books, including The Structure of Magic and Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, helped popularize NLP and influenced communication, coaching, and psychotherapy training worldwide.
John Grinder’s career took shape at the intersection of psychology and linguistics. Trained first in psychology at the University of San Francisco, he later pursued graduate work in linguistics at the University of California, San Diego, where his doctoral research focused on transformational grammar and language structure. He then joined the University of California, Santa Cruz, as a linguistics professor. That academic turn became the defining turning point of his public life: at Santa Cruz he met Richard Bandler, and Grinder’s precision with syntax and pattern analysis became central to the collaboration that produced Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP.
