Hugh Howey is an American science-fiction author whose work explores dystopian futures, survival, and technology’s social consequences. He is best known for Wool, later expanded into the Silo series, as well as Beacon 23 and Sand. A breakout self-publishing success, his books have sold millions and been translated widely.
Hugh Howey grew up in North Carolina in a household shaped by a farmer father, a schoolteacher mother, and his own early fascination with books, science, and sailing. The physical world around him mattered: farm silos, spiral staircases, boats, and engines later became part of his fictional vocabulary. At the College of Charleston he began as a physics major, later shifted toward English, and ultimately left without graduating as work at sea kept interrupting the conventional path. Before literary fame, he moved through practical jobs including computer repair, yacht work, audio-video installation, and bookselling, experiences that helped give his fiction its blend of mechanical realism, working-world detail, and wanderer’s perspective.
