Nato: May 27, 1923 – Fürth, Bavaria, Germany
Henry Kissinger was an American diplomat, political scientist, and author focused on foreign policy, diplomacy, and international order. He served as U.S. secretary of state and national security adviser, wrote influential books including Diplomacy and On China, and received the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize, while remaining a deeply debated global figure.
Henry Kissinger was born Heinz Alfred Kissinger in Fürth, Germany, in 1923, and his early life was defined by the upheaval of European antisemitism and war. In 1938, his family fled Nazi persecution and settled in New York. That immigrant experience, followed by service in the U.S. Army during the Second World War, gave him a lasting interest in power, order, and the fragility of political institutions. After the war, he studied at Harvard, earning degrees in government and beginning an academic career there. Harvard became the setting in which he moved from refugee and soldier to scholar, strategist, and eventually one of the most influential foreign-policy thinkers of the twentieth century.
