Gillian Flynn is an American novelist, screenwriter, and former television critic whose work centers on psychological suspense, crime, and the darker edges of family life. She is best known for Sharp Objects, Dark Places, and Gone Girl, whose multimillion-copy success and film adaptation made her a defining voice in contemporary thriller fiction.
Gillian Flynn emerged from Kansas City, Missouri, carrying with her a distinctly Midwestern sense of menace, humor, and intimacy. Born on February 24, 1971, and raised by two parents who taught, she studied English and journalism at the University of Kansas before earning a master’s degree from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism in 1997. She first imagined a career in crime reporting, then discovered she was better suited to shaping stories than intruding on grief. After brief work for U.S. News & World Report, she spent roughly a decade at Entertainment Weekly, first reporting and then serving as a television critic. That magazine career gave her discipline, pace, and an exacting sense of what made a story feel squandered or electric. Sharp Objects, her debut, was written on evenings, weekends, and vacations before fiction became her full-time work after the 2008 cuts that ended her job at the magazine.
