That practical education led to the first real turning point of his life: selling handmade hats and, by 1992, cofounding FUBU with childhood friends. When banks would not finance the business, he and his mother mortgaged their home, and an early assist from LL Cool J helped carry the brand from neighborhood hustle to a global streetwear success.
