Aviva Chomsky is an American historian and author whose work focuses on Latin American history, immigration, labor, and social justice. Her notable books include Undocumented: How Immigration Became Illegal, A History of the Cuban Revolution, and Central America’s Forgotten History, establishing her as a prominent public scholar on migration and U.S.–Latin America relations.
Aviva Chomsky has built a career in which activism and historical scholarship develop side by side. Raised in Massachusetts, she has described arriving at college in Philadelphia in 1975 without a clear sense of direction, then finding one after stepping away to work with the United Farm Workers during the 1976–77 boycott campaigns. That experience exposed her to Spanish, migrant labor, commodity politics, and organizing. In California, she became involved in Central America solidarity work and worked with Guatemalan and Salvadoran refugees, experiences that pushed her toward history as a way to understand present-day injustice. She went on to study Spanish, Portuguese, and then history at the University of California, Berkeley, where Central America, labor, and U.S. power became lasting intellectual anchors.
